Guam is in a state of mourning following the death of former Vice Speaker Theodore “Ted” S. Nelson, a six-term senator and long-time educator. Flags are being flown at half-staff in his honor.
Nelson, who also served as a physical education teacher, vice principal, and principal at George Washington High School, and also served at John F. Kennedy High School was remembered by Gov. Lourdes A. Leon Guerrero and Lt. Gov. Joshua F. Tenorio.
Leon Guerrero said Nelson dedicated his life to public service with humility and wisdom. She credited him with believing that knowledge was the key to a better future and working to build stronger communities and create opportunities for working families. “It was an honor to serve alongside him as Senator,” she said.
Tenorio noted Nelson’s advocacy for affordable housing and infrastructure development during his time in the Legislature. He highlighted Nelson's creation of the Land for the Landless program, which he said made homeownership a reality for countless families. “His work laid the groundwork for a stronger Guam, and his legacy will live on,” Tenorio said.
Nelson was married to the late Gloria B. Nelson and is survived by four children: Gwendolyn, Theodore "Ted" Jr., Glenn, and Rhonda.
