Town House Furniture & Appliances closes Saipan store

CHALAN KANOA, Saipan — Town House Furniture & Appliances closed its Saipan store on Feb. 28, marking another contraction in the NMI retail sector in the Northern Mariana Islands as businesses continue to grapple with weak economic conditions and declining consumer demand.
In a notice that circulated on social media on Feb. 27, the store’s management said, “After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to close Town House Furniture & Appliances store in the CNMI,” adding that the company’s “last day of operation will be Feb. 28, 2026.”

The Guam-based company, which has been in business for 75 years, thanked the community, saying, “We want to express our deepest gratitude for the CNMI community’s support and patronage over the years,” and thanked employees for their “hard work, loyalty, and dedication to the company.”
During an interview at the company’s Chalan Kanoa office, identifying statements only as coming from “management,” Town House said the decision followed months of internal review and direction from its Guam headquarters.
“We received a memo from the main office in Guam last January that they have, after careful consideration, decided to close Townhouse Furniture and Appliances,” management in Saipan said. “Given the economic situation here in the CNMI, they’ve made a difficult decision to close the business. It’s because the revenues here cannot sustain operating the business anymore.”
Management emphasized that employees will not lose employment as a result of the closure. “Our boss made sure that they’re not going to be displaced,” the official said. “Because we have sister companies, the employees at Town House, they’re going to be placed in our sister companies.”
The company clarified that the closure applies only to the furniture and appliances retail operation and not the broader Town House commercial property. “We are going to close the store. Just the [Town House] Furniture and Appliances,” management said, confirming that the Town House Shopping Center itself is not affected.
Management also sought to reassure customers that existing obligations will be honored. “On their invoices, there is also the number of the office. So, if they have any problem with their furniture and appliances, they can call the office,” the official said. “They will be taken care of.” The company said deliveries from recent sales “are still going to be completed” and that it will “continue to take care of our customers.”
Management also addressed rumors involving affiliated businesses, saying there is “no truth” to speculation that KFC, operated locally by parent company Jones & Guerrero, will close in the NMI.
