The Vincent Danz joined a search for a missing skiff, with several people aboard, near the Federated States of Micronesia on Aug. 4.
According to Chief Petty Officer Lisa A. Ferdinando, the skiff was reported overdue on July 31, 625 miles southeast of Guam and 70 miles north of Chuuk at Ruo Island in the Hall Islands. The Vincent Danz was joined by two C-130 aircraft from Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point, Hawaii and the Air Force Air Mobility Command.
Two commercial vessels under the Automated Mutual Assistance Vessel Rescue, a voluntary reporting system developed by the U.S. Coast Guard, also joined the search. The vessel arrived in Guam ahead of schedule on July 31. A welcome ceremony was scheduled for Aug 4, but has been postponed until further notice due to search efforts.
According to journal files, the Vincent Danz is the fourth newest Fast Response Cutter joining the Myrtle Hazard, the Oliver Henry, and the Frederick Hatch as part of U.S. Coast Guard Forces Micronesia/Sector Guam. The fifth cutter Jeffrey Palazzo is anticipated to arrive in Guam in late fall.
The cutter is named after Vincent Danz, a Coast Guard reservist and New York police officer who was killed responding to attacks during emergency response at the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001, when the World Trade Center collapsed. mbj
