According to usaspending.gov, in fiscal 2017, the federal government purchased $536 million in goods, services and construction on Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands. The federal government also awarded $341 million in grants to Guam and the NMI-based organizations. That’s a total of $877 million in federal funding flowing through the Marianas economy. With a total population of 220,000, that amounts to almost $4,000 per resident of Guam and the NMI. Not bad for a group of islands more than 7,000 miles away from the continental United States . . .
