MAJURO, Marshall Islands — The flood of Asians arriving in Majuro to establish businesses over the past two decades put the majority of small companies owned by Marshallese out of business — either through competition or buyouts of stores. A business sector once dominated by Marshall Islanders, Majuro’s private sector is now controlled by mainland Chinese (and other Asian) owned businesses. Admittedly, many of the owners are naturalized Marshallese citizens as a result of the Marshall Islands government’s passport sales programs of the 1990s.
