TOKYO — The first squadrons of jet aircraft from the U.S. Navy’s Carrier Air Wing Five have completed their transfer from Naval Air Facility Atsugi, to the west of Tokyo, to the enlarged Marine Air Corps Station Iwakuni, in central Japan.
The arrival of the units is part of the broader rebalancing of U.S. forces in the Asia-Pacific region, which includes transferring military personnel from Okinawa Prefecture to Guam.
The air assets now at Iwakuni are also significantly closer to the Korean peninsula in the event that they are required in that theater of operations.
