TOKYO — Opponents of plans to expand the U.S. Marine Corps’ Camp Schwab, in Okinawa Prefecture, staged a protest outside the Japanese consulate general in New York on Oct. 20.
The small-scale protest was led by environmental campaigners demanding that work to reclaim land off the existing site for two new runways be halted because it poses a threat to endangered species of flora and fauna. The creatures most at threat from the destruction of their habitat include protected dugongs, the protesters said.
