China encroaches on Japan, Palau in efforts to name undersea features

TOKYO — A number of undersea features that Beijing recently sought to name appear to be close to the limit of Japan’s exclusive economic zone and within Palau’s exclusive economic zone. The Sub-Committee on Undersea Feature Names, which comes under the Monaco-based International Hydrographic Organization, received 50 applications from the State Administration of China in 2016 to name undersea features, including sea mounts and ridges.
