Japanese island in discussion for U.S., Japan military training

TOKYO — Japan’s Ministry of Defense is in discussions with the company that owns Mageshima Island, off southern Kyushu, to purchase the property so it can be turned into an aviation training facility for both the U.S. military and Japan’s Self-Defense Forces.

Uninhabited since 1980, the island covers approximately 8.2 square kilometers and is administratively part of Kagoshima Prefecture. The island lies 40 kilometers from Kyushu.
