News flash – Palau presidential election hinges on absentee ballots

KOROR, Palau — Absentee ballots will be crucial in the Palau presidential election, as the tabulation of votes cast Nov. 1 differs by 78 votes, with more than 2,900 absentee ballots outstanding. Incumbent President Thomas E. Remegensau Jr. leads opponent Surangel S. Whipps Jr. with 4,108 votes over Whipps’ 4,030, according to the unofficial tally of the Palau Election Commission last night.

Absentee ballots were given a Nov. 8 deadline.

Votes for the seat of vice president, which is voted on separately from the president, is tallied at 4,133 for Raynold “Arnold” Oilouch and 3,900 for . . .
