Marine-occupied land to be returned to Okinawa

TOKYO — Japan and the United States have reached agreement on the return of around 4,000 hectares of jungle in northern Okinawa that is presently used by the U.S. Marine Corps for training to the prefecture before the end of the year.

More than half of the U.S. military’s Northern Training Area is to be returned, with Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga saying that he hopes Okinawa residents will recognize that the government is doing what it can to reduce the burden of the U.S. military presence on the prefecture.
