Raising children costly with hard-to-quantify benefits

Almost everyone knows that raising a child is expensive. How expensive? Estimates range from nearly $200 000 to $350 000 or more to raise a child from birth to age 17. The college years from18 to 21 could add another $12 000 to $50 000 for each year of college in current dollars. Since 1960 the U.S. Department of Agriculture has been keeping track of child-rearing costs and each year publishes a report of its findings . . .
