We were recently among the recipients of an e-mail containing a story that ends with an elderly man telling a snooty French immigration official that no one had been available to check his passport the last time he had visited France - on June 6 1944 in Normandy. It is appropriate that we are reminded of what it is that we commemorate each year on Memorial Day - the ultimate sacrifice made by thousands of young men and women in defense of their country . . .
