PUERTO RICO Saipan - The USS Safeguard one of a special class of Navy ships built for rescue and salvage arrived on Saipan Jan. 6 to begin a 21-day operation clearing the shipping channel and harbor of objects that are considered dangers to navigation. The Safeguard and a 15-man diving detachment completed 48 dives and removed 25 objects deemed hazardous to navigation mostly huge coral boulders weighing as much 40 tons from the harbor and main channel. These big rocks are at a depth of 34 feet to 36 feet and are considered a danger to ships moving in . . .
