Laptop searches are invasive but legal during airport screening

Carrying a laptop when I travel makes me paranoid. It's not just the hassle of being asked if I have one to take it out put it on the conveyor belt turn it on (occasionally) and then of course put it back in the bag while juggling putting back on my shoes belt and looking for all other belongings that are spread among three or four different plastic bins . . .
